Type is everywhere! Look Around You. Collect Specimens
In class activity: Walking tour of Love Library / Special Collections / Nebraska History Museum / Children's Museum / Sheldon Art Museum to gather typographic specimens.

Type anatomy / Classification
6 classifications / 2-3 letters of your name. Stack them up and reveal their parts.

Projects [100 pts.]
Project 01
Type History + Research Presentation
Design panels that showcases your knowledge of typography and the history of the development of the western alphabet. Design a timeline with information about an assigned research topic.
[Includes an Annotated Bibliography]
Project 02
Reading, Hierarchy, Designing Systems and Setting Type
Explore type as shape, creating order, organizing an heirarchy of information. Discover variations in type and learn how to compose with type. Experiment with type as form and learn how to create unique effects with typography.
Project 03
Research +Typographic Space / Type in Motion
Generate text as Image / typographic form as communication
Explore type on a timeline. Type in 3D.

Showcase your involvement, interest and depth of investigation

Final Exam [100]
There will be a formal review prior to the exam. The exam will assess how much you have learned about type anatomy, classification, theory, history and design methodologies.

Watch a great documentary film about typography.
Typography, Authority, Audience, History
Who were the early readers of the Medieval times? How did type look and how was it made? Field trip to Love Library Special Collections.
Grid Deconstruction
Break down how a publication is designed. Discover how visual heirarchy is built in the process.
